Creating microsites

Microsites (also known as satelite websites) are very small and simple sites created to promote a specific product or a model range and support your main ecommerce site.

Why should I create microsites?

  • Visitors like smaller and simplier sites.
  • High level of specialization increases site credibility.
  • Microsite results will appear in search engines along with your ecommerce site results.
  • Black-hat SEO techniques may be used on microsites with almost no fear of search engine ban.
  • Microsites are very easy to set up using many great free website making services out there (Webnode, Weebly and many more).

Microsites content

Take your time with the keyword research which helps you find the most suitable keywords and design best website structure. Find out popularity (search volume) of the following keyword combinations: “[product name] price”,”[product name] video” or “[product name] review”.

  • Place 3 to 5 top product benefits to the microsite homepage.
  • Add as many beautiful photos or videos as possible.
  • Don’t forget to cite some customer reviews. Use Google Discussions search to obtain some nice reviews from discussion forums.
  • Write your own product review. Link reviews from third-party sites.
  • Add the “buy now” call to action on every page of the microsite. Try to create a specialized “Where to buy” page containing price comparison of your site and your more expensive competitors.
  • Each popular product has its imitations. Tell your visitors how to distinguish between the original and the fake products. The visitor will be grateful for not buying a fake!

Development and promotion

Geeks will choose do-it-yourself solutions like WordPress. If you are not experienced in creating WordPress sites, try the free as-a-service solutions mentioned above. I prefer Webnode for my microsites because it’t very easy to use and they offer nice website templates.

Exchange links with other microsites and uncompetitive ecommerce sites. Example: You sell school bags so arange cooperation with some ecommerce site which sells bag ornaments.

Create a Facebook fan page “I love my powerball” or “I wear Crocs shoes every day” and add the facebook fan box to the microste.

Set up a test Google or Facebook PPC campaign!

Collabim News, January 2011

A new version of Collabim was introduced last week. Check out what’s new:

Search Engine Snippets Preview

Collabim shows you the Google, Yahoo or Bing results preview for every tracked keyword. Check the snippets and improve your page text to attract more traffic to your site.

Position Tracking

We have redesigned the entire position tracking process. The new version resolves the following issues:

  • Companies tracking thousands of keywords from a single IP address were occasionally blocked by Google.
  • Search engine rankings were not updated if nobody from your company was using a browser with the Collabim extension installed (for example due to holiday).

In the previous version Collabim tracked the positions of each user’s keywords only. This is about to change.

  • For paying users,  the browser extension tracks the positions of all keywords associated with the user’s account.
  • In the case of free account users, the extention tracks the positions of keywords which Collabim needs to track, regardless of user account. The browser extention will track several dozens of keywords per day, hence the computer/browser/internet connection speed is not slowed down.

The position tracking system is now much more reliable. You don’t need to worry about the security and confidentiality of your data. The browser extension processes keywords and watched website URLs only. Is not possible to identify the website owner or any other confidential information.

Other Improvements

  • New “Remember me” option in the login dialog.
  • We added a “Client” user role, so now you can finally provide your clients with restricted access to Collabim.
  • Firefox & Chrome extensions were redesigned to improve usability and descrease memory use.
  • We love our Mac users so we have created an extension for Safari 5.
